4 Ways To Spice Up Basics

4 Ways To Spice Up Basics

There are so many ways to spice up basics you already have in your closet, and here are 4 different ways to update your everyday look (so no one thinks you’re wearing the same outfit everyday!).

For all of these outfits, I started off with a basic long sleeved turtleneck, staple black jeans and finished with a black belt. Everything in these looks is just added onto this same outfit.

Cozy Winter Vibes

Stay warm while looking cool.

For this look, I added a fluffy shawl collared cream vest* underneath an oversized leather jacket* to create an edgy Winter vibe, without adding too much bulk to the look. I’m carrying my staple black handbag that can be worn as both a shoulder bag or a cross body, and completed the look with black leather hiking-look booties with cream faux fur accents. Wear this look walking around the city during the day or out to happy hour or date night in the evening, while staying warm and looking cool.

Edgy Casual

When you have comfy shoes and a backpack, you could go anywhere!

For this look, I started with a fitted leather jacket* (this one has a faux hoodie insert, but feel free to just add a regular black or colored hooded jacket underneath). I added a pom beanie to stay warm and a backpack to carry all your essentials easily, all day long! I completed the outfit with leather combat boots for an edgy yet comfortable look, perfect for all-day wear. Wear this outfit to an amusement park, or anywhere really. When you have comfy shoes and a backpack, you could go anywhere!

A Pop of Color

I can say, I do wear a TON of black, but sometimes I need something with a little more LIFE to it!

Who doesn’t love a little color in their wardrobe! I can say, I do wear a TON of black, but sometimes I need something with a little more LIFE to it! I added a red wool peacoat* (I got this one several years ago, and it zips off into a cropped jacket, but I’ve attached a similar one) and decided to go with warmer neutrals for this look. I’m carrying a leather camel shoulder bag* and wearing camel suede heeled booties with cream faux fur accents. This is one of my go-to looks for date night in Winter, and I seriously love wearing this out at night. But feel free to wear this anytime you want a little pop out of the ordinary, there’s really no wrong place to wear this outfit!

Urban Ski Chalet

Making my way downtown, walking fast to the coffee shop, not the ski lodge.

With this look, I aimed for warmth, but also something appropriate for the city, since I live about 2+ hours from any snow. I’m wearing a cropped down jacket* with a large hood and fur trim detail, a basic black beanie, a cross body handbag* ideal for all day wear or an evening out when you don’t have a lot to carry. I completed this ensemble with some of my favorite buckled booties for a little extra metallic accent! (who doesn’t like bright silver buckles, right?) Wear this look walking around downtown with a hot coffee or to a casual evening dinner!

I hope you enjoyed these easy tips to spice up an all black basic look! Which outfit is your favorite?

Are Leggings Real Pants?

Are Leggings Real Pants?

Well, kind of yes, and kind of no. Today, I am featuring 5 different ways to style your favorite leggings, from the office to GNO in a way that no one can contradict you on the whole “real pants” issue.

So, you may not know this, but I LOVE wearing leggings. There for awhile, I would wear nothing but leggings: to the gym, at home, running errands, to the bar, even on date night with B 😳…until I started my current job. Working in an office, instead of telecommuting, meant I needed to look a bit more “office appropriate” by wearing “actual pants”; but in my everyday life, I still LIVE in leggings!

I have dozens of leggings from multiple different brands, and they are all amazing, but one of my favorites has to be the High-Waist Moto Legging from Alo Yoga.

I own these moto leggings in 8 different colors, and receive compliments EVERY TIME I wear them!

Today, I am featuring both the “Black/Black Glossy” and the “Black Performance Leather/BlkG” and I have shown a few different ways to wear these leggings, although there really is NO LIMIT (Thanks, Cady Heron) to where you go, how you style, or what you are doing in these super comfy leggings.

Edgy Street Style

Edgy Street Style

For this look, I wanted to build an outfit that was both effortless and comfortable for weather in the 60s – 70s (ie: California Fall/Winter). I started with the Moto Leggings, of course, and paired it with a black vintage looking tank top from Target.  I added a long, grey tweed coat from TopShop for added warmth and completed the look with my “oh-so-comfortable” Dr. Martens Pascal Boots. Now we are ready to hit the streets in style and comfort! (the grey coat I’ve tagged is not the one I’m wearing, but it’s similar)

  • Feel free to add another layer underneath the coat, like a hoodie or a textured cardigan and top off the look with a beanie to keep you extra warm on those cool Fall evenings!

Athleisure – Chic

Athleisure Chic

For this look, I was going for my everyday uniform during Fall; “Athleisure – Chic”.  I love adding edgy pieces to my wardrobe, because that’s truly what makes me feel like my most CONFIDENT self. I started with the Alo Yoga Moto Leggings and paired them with a light grey, off the shoulder sweater (this is not the one I have, but it’s similar) and a free people bralette, so when my straps showed, my look didn’t fall short. I added a leather jacket and faux leather buckled booties (that I am currently wearing with EVERYTHING!). Wear this outfit everywhere from the office to date night without anyone batting an eye.

Sporty Spice

Feel both sporty and put together in an outfit that allows you to shoot that touchdown or dribble that ball into the endzone! #gosports 🏈

For this look, I paired the Moto Leggings with a red oversized pullover sweater, that I tucked in to create a more defined waist. *If you’re going into the office, I recommend leaving the sweater untucked so you don’t show off your bum to your coworkers at the water cooler. Add some sneakers to keep it comfy, and you’re ready for anything! (The sweater and sneakers are not the exact ones I’m wearing, but they are similar.)

  • To elevate this look for a holiday party or date night, swap out the sneaks for some heeled booties, and add a black peacoat or leather jacket and you’re good to go!

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

I don’t know about you, but when it’s Sunday and I have to leave the house, I want to wear the coziest clothes I own, along with looking put together too.

This look is cozy enough to wear to the farmer’s market or to the nearest coffee shop ☕️ to pick up your daily caffeine fix, but it’s also stylish enough to wear out to Brunch with the family…or to bottomless mimosa Brunch with the girls 🍾,  however YOU do Sunday Brunch is up to you!

I paired the Moto Leggings with a white, long sleeve tee from Aerie and added a long grey cardigan on top. Grab your favorite oversized sunglasses and booties and you are Sunday ready!

  • (the exact tee I’m wearing is THIS, but they are sold out of the color I’m wearing, and the one I’ve tagged is great too! I own that one in 4 different colors!)

Morning Hike in LA

Morning Hike in LA

Are you an outdoorsy person? I love working out and lifting weights, but running and excessive cardio is NOT my thing, which is why I love hiking; it’s fairly slow, but intense depending on the hills or trails you take. I really enjoy being out in nature and working up a sweat while surrounded by fresh air and incredible views.

I figured for the fifth outfit, I would show you something a bit more “workout friendly”. Just because you are working up a sweat doesn’t mean you can’t dress at 100%, right?

I love upping my workout clothing-game by wearing cute clothes that make me feel confident, strong and supported for my workouts.

I paired the Moto Leggings with an olive hoodie that is cozy enough to keep me warm at the start of the hike, but roomy enough to keep me cool toward the end. Complete this look with sunglasses and hiking sneakers, and you’re totally Runyon ready!

  • (the sneakers I’m wearing in the photo aren’t the best for hiking, so I’ve tagged another pair that would be more appropriate and stable for hiking.)

Did you learn any new ways to style YOUR leggings for work or date night? How do YOU like to style your leggings? And what’s YOUR take on leggings as real pants? 🤔 I would LOVE to know in the comments!

5 Last Minute Halloween Costumes You Already Have In Your Closet

5 Last Minute Halloween Costumes You Already Have In Your Closet

So, it’s October 28th and you’re still procrastinating on your Halloween costume. Don’t you worry, I’ve got your back! These 5 Halloween costume and makeup ideas will be super easy and simple for you to recreate without having to purchase anything!

Vampire

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

This all black ensemble is ideal for anyone attempting to channel Dracula this Halloween!

Costume: I paired skinny black jeans with a black turtleneck for an all black vampire look. I layered a black blazer on top and popped the collar to mimick and accentuate the traditional high collar on a Vampire cloak. Black booties complete the look!

Makeup: Apply your foundation as normal, and add a little more creme highlighter to the high points of your face to appear a bit more “dead” or “ghostly” and hollow out your cheeks with a grey eyeshadow used in place of contour powder.  You can create a smokey eye with a little brown and black eyeshadow and eyeliner, and add a drop of “blood” in either red lipstick or lipliner from the corner of one side of your mouth; feel free to apply red or burgundy lipstick to your lips to finish off the makeup.

Hair: Add some dry shampoo and tease the roots with texturizing spray and hair spray to add extra volume and grit. With this costume, you’ll be saying “I vant to suck your blood,” all night long!

Eleven (Season 2) from Stranger Things

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Are you as obsessed with stranger things as I am? Well, now you too can be Eleven from Season 2.

Costume: I started this look with rolled hem boyfriend jeans and added a black top and a blazer (preferably with shoulder pads – channelling major 80s vibes) to complete the top half of the ensemble. I added crew socks with slip on Vans to complete the look (I don’t have Chuck Taylors, but wear those if you have them, since they are actually a part of her actual ensemble).

Makeup: Apply foundation, blush and contour, and focus on accentuating your eyes. Create a full black smokey eye to recreate Eleven’s punk look.

Hair: Curl the ends of your hair (if your hair is straight, or leave curly if it is naturally), slick back the top of your hair with hair gel, pull the hair tight to the nape of your neck and secure horizontally with bobby pins, be sure to fluff the curls over the bobby pins, so they can’t be seen.

With this look, you’ll be fighting off Demigorgons in no time!

Witch

The Sanderson sisters won’t have anything on you in this outfit!

Costume: This costume has a few extra pieces you may want to purchase, but it’s completely unnecessary. I started with a black flowy spaghetti strap dress and layered a black long sleeved shirt underneath. I added black fishnet stockings and black knee-high socks and paired red booties with the look for an added pop of color, but you could go with black booties instead. I actually made the feather vest, but it’s completely unnecessary for a witch costume. As for the hat, you may want to purchase that item, or you could paint a chopstick black or brown and carry that as your wand instead of wearing a hat. Another look, is to channel the witches from American Horror Story: Coven and throw on some black sunglasses instead of the hat or wand altogether! The choices are up to you!

Makeup: I would stick to your everyday makeup routine and add extra eyeliner or a smokey eye for a look that’s a little more haunting. Pair that with some dark red lipstick and you’re good to go!

Hair: Make it big! Add dry shampoo and curl/crimp your hair so it’s all different textures, tease the roots and add hair spray and texturizing spray for a style that will last all night!

Detective

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Get out your spy kit, you are going on a manhunt, well not for a man, but maybe for candy and a little wine?

Costume: I started with the base of a plain black tee shirt and black leggings; I added a beige trench coat, tall tan boots, and some aviator glasses, because detectives always wear sunglasses even at night (Who else just started singing, “I wear my sunglasses at night…” because I definitely did, and now I can’t get it out of my head.)

Makeup: Apply your everyday makeup routine and maybe darken up your eyes and lips for something a little different, but it’s completely unnecessary. With this costume, you can really do whatever you want!

Hair: Like with makeup, you can really do whatever you want with this look, but a high ponytail would look really cute with this outfit. (You could also wear your hair down: curled or straight.)

Audrey Hepburn

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

You really can never go wrong with Holly Golightly from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s!”

Costume: Everyone has an LBD (a little black dress in their closet, so we paired that with a pearl necklace and some cat eye sunglasses; add some black heels and you’re good to go! (Sidenote: if you have long black gloves or a cigarette holder, feel free to wear that too!)

Makeup: Apply your everyday makeup routine, but make your brows a little bolder, your mascara a little darker and your eyeliner a little more cat-eyed! Add a light pinky-beige lip and you are ready to start eating croissants on 5th Avenue!

Hair: For your hair, you will want to create a french twist in the back but slicking back each side of your hair and rolling them into each other in the back of your head and securing with bobby pins. If you have a hair comb that looks like a crown, add that too!
